You may already know the obvious perks that come with a yachting career, such as the money and travel. However, there are so many more advantages of working on a yacht. Whether you choose to be a bosun, stewardess, or even captain, each position will bring irreplaceable opportunities that you will never forget. It is a job that you can do for as long or as short as you like, all while reaping the rewards. If you find yourself stuck in your boring corporate job or are just looking for a career change, check out yachting – your life will never be the same. So, what are the benefits of working on a yacht?

1. Making new lifelong friends from all over the world

This isn’t your typical day job where everyone lives within a certain radius of the office. In yachting, you will meet people from all different countries! Diversity is so important, and this is the perfect job if you’re looking to expand your group of friends. Working and living in such close quarters with others can be difficult, but it can also be quite the bonding experience.

2. Having unique experiences

With no set schedule and “normal” weekday, it’s a break from the monotonous lifestyle you might be trying to break away from. Not only is there no commute, but you get to wake up in a new country with a gorgeous view nearly every charter. A chef even cooks your meals, making you feel like a guest for a brief moment before serving others. Instead of going to the break room for lunch, you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise on the aft deck before the guests wake up or sneak away to your bed for a nap. The hours are long, but worth it.

3. Networking

Coming across a variety of successful people is very common in yachting. From CEOs to entrepreneurs, many guests are nothing short of interesting. If you’re lucky, you may have the opportunity to stay in touch with some of these guests and further your career. Even the owners are highly influential people. You never know who you could meet – they may end up changing your life.

4. Learning a wide variety of skill

Yachting certainly isn’t a stationary or clerical type of job. Professionalism, computer skills, problem-solving, and more can be learned at any job, but yachting takes it to a whole new level. One minute you’ll be making small talk with the guests and practicing your conversational skills, then the next, you’ll be setting up boat toys. You’ll learn to be a laundry guru, a “turn-down” perfectionist, bartender, and more. There are not many other jobs where you get to be a jack of all trades.

5. Receiving generous tips

Not all guests are as gratuitous as they should be, but for the most part, the tips are not bad. Although they vary according to the length of the charter, most are reflective of your hard work. This, plus your salary, makes for a nice chunk of change to chip away at your debt, travel more, or do any other activity that you otherwise could not afford.

6. Lots of opportunities for time off

Yachting isn’t a typical year-round career. It’s a seasonal job, meaning you work for some time, then you have some time off. This is perfect if you want to, for instance, work for five months, then have one month off. Some yachts also only offer positions in certain seasons, such as winter or summer. With more time off, you can explore more of the world, spend time with family, and more.
