10 Best Things to Spend Your Tip Money On

Posted by Ashley Wright

One of the best parts of working on a yacht is the tip money. Although guests may be hard to handle and unruly at times, the thick white envelope distributed amongst the crew at the end *hopefully* makes all of the hard work worth it.

If the first thing you do with your tip money is pay bills, then congrats – you’re responsible! But also kind of boring. Treat yourself to something out-of-the-ordinary and exciting. If you’re looking for ideas, check out these ten best things to spend your tip money on!

1. A vacation of your own!

While you may sometimes feel like you’re on vacation gazing at the gorgeous views from the aft deck, the needy guests will remind you that you’re there to serve them. If you’ve desired to travel somewhere where you haven’t yet been by yacht, now is your chance to go! Go on a road trip (if you can remember what land feels like), fly somewhere tropical, or take a staycation – the possibilities are endless.

2. Fish pedicure

If you’re an adventurous person who’s willing to try new activities, fish pedicures are right up your alley! Banned in over ten US states, this pedicure uses hundreds of small toothless carp Garra rufa fish to eat the dead skin from your feet. At $45-$95 per treatment, you’ll have plenty of tip money left over to try other spa activities. Many people swear by them, saying that they’re feet are cleaner than ever!

3. Concert tickets

Who doesn’t love live music? The best you can do on deck is throw in some earbuds and listen to your favorite band, so when the tip meeting is over and you have some time to yourself, see which band is in town! Live streams and Spotify just aren’t the same. Head on over to the nearest venue and let loose!

4. Skydiving

You may not be able to dive overboard when dealing with obnoxious charter guests, but you can pay to jump out of a plane later! This exhilarating experience might bring you fear, but the rewards will outweigh it. The price of skydiving varies, though each trip is usually no less than $150 – definitely worth it for the memories and confidence you’ll gain.

5. Shopping spree

Charters only last a few weeks at a time. When you’re not in uniform, you might find yourself realizing that you’re out of clothes, or you’re due for a new handbag. Treat yourself to a shopping spree or makeover – you’ll be a whole new person! Retail therapy is great right after stressful situations, like being trapped on a boat for days at a time. Your wallet might be lighter, but you’ll get a brief rush of excitement trying out everything you’ve ever wanted.

6. Jewelry

Yacht crew members shouldn’t wear a ton of jewelry on deck for obvious reasons, but it doesn’t hurt to indulge yourself every once in a while. If the new Apple Watch came out while you were at sea, buy it! It doubles as a cute accessory and tracks your endless steps on deck. A new bracelet or necklace would be nice, too – if you’re trapped below deck, you might as well look good.

7. Smart Luggage

Smart Luggage

The Bigger Carry-On is the luggage you never knew you needed. This unbreakable luggage will be your new travel buddy with all of its innovative features. Not only is it sleek and compact, but it has numerous tools within itself that you’ll definitely use (unlike other useless luggages). Name another suitcase that has a removable laundry bag, USB devices and a TSA-approved lock. I’ll wait.
